Day 1 : O Come, O Come Emmanuel

I love Christmas! I love Christmas carols! I love Christ! This Christmas season, I will post a Christmas carol of the day to think about and meditate on!

O Come O Come Emmanuel

The favourite O Come, O Come Emmanuel carol was originally written in Latin text in the 12th Century. The author of the words and composer to the music of O Come, O Come Emmanuel is unknown. It is , however believed that the melody was of French origin and added to the text a hundred years later. The Latin was translated into English by John Mason Neale in 1851.

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times did'st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel .

"Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the LORD. And many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you." Zeph. 2:10-11

For thousands of years, the people of Israel clung to the hope that God would send the promised Deliverer, the seed of the woman who would finally conquer, the One who would free them from their captors.

Waiting is hard. Doubts creep in as to God's integrity and faithfulness. Many lost hope. "Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants!" Psalm 90:13
But God's timing is perfect and the Messiah was on His way, just not quite in the way they expected!

Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel SHALL come to Thee, O Israel!
God is Faithful! As He promises, He SHALL do!

That's neat that you put this song today because this morning I was reading in Psalm 65, and in verse 3 it says, "As for our transgressions, YOU WILL PROVIDE ATONEMENT FOR THEM!!" And then in verse 5, "By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our salvation!" God HAS PROVIDED ATONEMENT! He Himself became our atonement, and died once for all! He does not have to go in year by year, as the priests did. But rather, God's wrath is satisfied by His perfect sacrifice made once! Wow! It thrills me so!!
