reminders of truth

I don't often take the time anymore to think, to ponder, to reflect, to remember. And I really need to.

I was home all day today. What a delightful day! I had time to pray and read the word and sing to the Lord and do laundry and study and play the piano and have some friends over and drink tea and eat warm cookies and laugh a lot and...and...I evaluate my day based on what I DO.
If I am busy and productive, it's a good day, right? Then I look into my heart. Oh, Lord, what do I find there? So often I find mixed motives, selfish desires, and people-pleasing attitudes, which shames and frustrates me because I want to want to want to want to please my God in everything!

So today I looked at my heart through the lens of God's Word and reminded myself of the TRUTH regarding myself.

  • My heart is totally depraved, incapable of pleasing God
  • My heart is totally redeemed, destined for eternity with God
  • My heart is being sanctified, and every day is a day in which I have the opportunity to become more like Christ
  • My heart is prone to wander and leave the God I love, even though He gave me my definition of love
  • My heart is treasure to be guarded and kept pure
  • My heart is designed to worship. I am always either worshipping God or something else
  • My heart can be deceived and blinded, therefore, I must be in the Word, which illuminates and reveals everything about me
I was home all day today. What a delightful day! I had time to DO many things that I love and I also had to time to THINK and to recommit my heart to God, because without Him, I am nothing.

When Pressed on Every Side

"Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves" says the New Testament.  Discernment: choosing who to listen to when surrounded by many voices whispering (or shouting) council.
Back in the Old Testament, Nehemiah was trying to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, a huge task in itself. But then you add in the opposition...
Four letters come from Tobiah and Sanballat, inviting Nehemiah to come meet with them. He saw through it as a trap, and so refused. Then they send him a fifth letter, "It is known all around that you and the Jews are going to rebel, and that you are trying to make yourself their king." Most people would get worked up at the effects of such a false report, but Nehemiah responds: "No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind."
Calm. He knows that their objective is to frighten them from the work. Then a brief cry rises from Nehemiah, "But now, O God, strengthen my hands!"
Then a "friend" of his warns him that "they" are going to try and kill him by night. The Lord gives him the discernment that this friend is in the pay of his enemies, and so disregards the "help."
"Remember Sanballat and Tobiah, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess Noadiah and all the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid."

"In those days, the rulers of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah..." Wait, what????
...and Tobiah's letters came to them." Hold it! What is going on?
"For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife." Oh, now it's clear. Okay, maybe not:)
These people named (Shecaniah, Jehohanan, Meshullam, Berechiah) are all powerful men in the land. They are leaders of the province Beyond the River. They are a mighty lobbying group that the men of Judah can't afford to offend.
And so they speak many words of Tobiah's wisdom and good conduct in the presence of Nehemiah.
Poor Nehemiah is getting threatening letters and messages. He has prophets telling him of his doom. His "advisors" and "friends" are actually in the pay of his enemy.
He is hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed. And why not?
Because he is continually reminding himself of the TRUTH. When we are surrounded by enemies and those who drag us down, it wears on us, and we become discouraged, eventually giving up. UNLESS, we remind ourselves of who we are in God and what God has promised to us.
Nehemiah had a direct command from God to rebuild the city walls of Jerusalem.  God promised to be with him, to give him strength. God is Nehemiah's God. He has a relationship with Him, and he will not be shaken.
Nehemiah has little prayers interspersed throughout his book. "God be my strength." "Oh my God, strengthen my hands!"
Back in chapter 2, "And the kind granted to me what I said, for the good hand of my God was upon me."
He continually reminds himself, no matter how dark the night, that God is my with him. God is his strength. God is his fortress. God is his commander.

And we must do the same, my friends. When those around us don't understand why we stand, when we are so busy with activities we are ready to keel over, when we are troubled in our spirit by doubts and weaknesses...tell yourself the truth.  Remind yourself of who you were before Christ, who you are in Christ, and what God wants you to do through Christ! Do not let the shadowy voices of counsel drain your strength. Do not let the enemy make you afraid.

There are so many verses that remind us that God is our strength! God is our shelter! God will never leave us or forsake us! God is our defender! God is our TRUTH!
Keep your eyes focused on the Lord and His promises, and not the "giants in the land," who, though many, are no match for our God!

The Promise

"For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." "And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.  "For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. "So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath,  so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.  We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." Hebrews 6:13-20
I am finding much hope in these verses today! They are preceeded by verses about "falling away," which no matter what your understanding of that term is, they are a rather frightening thought. But the point of them, as stated in Hebrews 6:10-12, is that we may press onward and seek to be even more earnest in our faith, that we may be certain on our hope. The passage above compares our hope with that of Abraham's, as we have the same guarantee of our hope. God swore by Himself, though His promise alone would be unchangable, so that Abraham would come to understand WHO GOD IS, and that nothing He says will ever fall to the ground. When God says something, you can be sure that it will come to pass. But God swore by Himself, so that the promise of blessing was doubly-insured by the GREAT I AM, for Whom IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO EVER LIE. What is the result of this truth? Why does it matter? It matters because "we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.  We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain!" If those words do not fill your soul with a joy that could explode into song...you either need to read them again, or consider your spiritual state.
We can hold fast to the truths we have been taught, because He who promised is faithful! This Holy Word is 100% true and accurate...GOD SAID SO. Nothing He says ever fails. He is Truth. When He says that whoever believes on Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life, it's true. When He says the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses me from all sin, it's true. When He says that Jesus Christ ascended on high, and is interceding on our behalf, it's true. When He says that Jesus is preparing A PLACE FOR US, where neither moth or rust can decay, and where thieves cannot break in and steal, it's true. When He says that to him who overcomes, he will be given a crown of life, it's true. When He says that in heaven we shall have no sorrow, death, or pain, it's true. When He says that we will be forever at peace and joyful in the presence of our God and Savior, it's True!
We can trust Him, friends! Not only is EVERYTHING HE SAYS TRUTH, but HE IS TRUTH. And when He swears by Himself, well, you can bet your life that it will come to pass! And that's what we're called to do as Christians. Give your life as insurance that every word of God is true, that you are willing to live and die to proclaim the Name of Him who ransomed your life from destruction and in whom YOU HAVE ETERNAL HOPE.
We have this sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

"And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises." Hebrews 6:11-12

Day 13: I Know Not How

Tune is available via midi here.

1. I know not how that Bethlehem’s Babe
Could in the Godhead be;
I only know the manger Child
Has brought God’s life to me.

2. I know not how that Calvary’s cross
A world from sin could free;
I only know its matchless love
Has brought God’s love to me.

3. I know not how that Joseph’s tomb
Could solve death’s mystery;
I only know a living Christ,
Our immortality.

We KNOW that Jesus Christ came to earth as a baby, fully God and fully man.
We KNOW that through Him we have forgiveness of sins and an inheritance with those who are sanctified through faith in Him.
We KNOW that we have eternal life.

This Christmas many people become desperate, lost and confused. They don't know the truth, and they don't even know if there IS truth.
We KNOW that there is truth, and we KNOW the TRUTH HIMSELF.
Do not be ashamed of the Truth, for those who know it will be set free by it.

To think or not to think...

“Thoroughly worldly people never understand even the world, they rely altogether on a few cynical maxims which are not true.” –G.K. Chesterton

Isn't it sad that most "teenagers" cannot reason and think for themselves?  They are told what to believe and are not taught to question anything.  Questioning can be good and beneficial, for it is through questioning that we strengthen our beliefs because we really believe it.  Truths that we have always been told are true, become the Truth we cling to and are willing to die for, because we have been fully convinced that it is True.
Have I lost you already?

I am one of those young people who thinks thinking is fun.  My parents have trained my to reason and to question, and to read good books which encourage me to do so.  I am in the process of reading G.K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy.  Some of my friends tell me that I overthink and overanalyze, but I am not convinced that is true.  I am more inclined to believe that they do not think enough.  In the book of Isaiah the LORD says, "Come, let us reason together."
Matthew 10:16 "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves."
1Peter 1:13 "Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;"
1Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

It is much easier for Satan to devour those who do not think, who are not reasoning and sober.  If you merely float through life, accepting what comes to you (no matter the source), you will be easily devoured, without yourself even noticing.

The public school is certainly not a place where children are encouraged to really reason and think. They know the "facts," but not all sides of the story or the reasoning behind it.  They are taught and trained what to think and how to think it.  Their minds are infiltrated on every side by lies and partial truths (read: lies) and they accept them, because, they're in school to learn, right? And yet, as the quote at the beginning of this post argues, they do not even understand the worldly mindset in which they are believing.

Instead of putting me into this environment, where my mind powers are dulled (as opposed to being sharpened as some advocates of this system would argue) my parents have chosen to educate and disciple me at home, where I am free to think and reason and question.

Today my reasoning is expanding, so that which I believe to be unreasonable is becoming more reasonable, and wording that is considered quite boggling, is almost understandable. There's much to be said for reading things that most adults would consider confusing, and sifting my way through it, which does take brain exercise. For how can I become wise if I never go outside the limits of what I comprehend already? And how I can I seek to understand what is really worth understanding, if I do not seek to understand what I do not understand?

And yet, if I cling to reason alone, then I will go insane.  For reason itself is constrained in a very small, unexpandable circle.  Though my reasoning may make perfect sense, the fact that everything makes sense would drive me crazy, because that would make me self-sufficient.  There are things that I believe that are not strictly "reasonable".

1Corinthians 1:18-25 says, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?  For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.  For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;  but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."

Here's another quote from Orthodoxy:  "For the circle [of reason] is perfect and infinite in its nature, but it is fixed forever in its size; it can never be larger or smaller.  But the cross, though it has at its heart a collision and a contradiction, can extend its four arms forever without altering its shape.  Because it has a paradox at its center, it can grow without changing,  The circle returns to itself and is bound.  The cross opens its arms to the four winds; it is a signpost for free travellers."

Now, I am sorry if I have not made complete sense in this post (I still have a long way to go in my reasoning skills:) but I do not apologize if you think it unclear because you only skimmed over it.  In order to really learn from something, you must stop and think, really think and meditate, and it is then that the eyes of your understanding are opened.

"The one created thing which we cannot look at is the one thing in the light of which we look at everything."

Open our eyes, Lord, that we may see!  Open our minds, so that we may comprehend more of how wonderful You are.  The Cross is both unreasonable and true, and it is the center of our faith.  Even though there are things we cannot completely understand, that doesn't mean we don't trust You, Father, but that we are excited to spend the rest of our lives seeking out Your incomprehensibility.

"The way we are going to think tomorrow depends largely on what we are thinking today." -Brown

If you found this post very dull, I would have to concur with what G.K. Chesterton said:
"Dulness will, however, free me from the charge I most lament; the charge of being flippant."

Sin and Absolute Truth

In our world full of tolerance and relativism, it is important for us to know what we believe about sin. For instance, if we’re trying to witness to someone and tell them about Christ saving them from their sin, but they don’t believe that what they’re doing is sin, what do we tell them? If they say “Well, you may believe that, but I don’t really think of lying as a sin.”

If you believe that this world has evolved over time, that there is no God, that there is no purpose for life, then the concept of no absolute truth makes perfect sense. If there is no God holding us accountable for our actions, then we can do whatever we want; it doesn’t really matter.
If there is no absolute truth, if truth is defined by each person, then we have no ground to stand upon. If there is no absolute truth, we can have no confidence that what we believe is the truth. We can have no confidence that our salvation according to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ can save us. I mean, if there is no absolute truth, then what right have we to say that those who don’t believe in Christ are on their way to a Christ-less, awful eternity? If there is no absolute truth, then our faith is in vain. If there is no absolute truth, then there is chaos and anarchy.
But, on the flip side, if God does exist, if He created the world and every individual person with a specific purpose, then He is the One with the plumb line (measuring stick), He is the One who dictates right and wrong.

There is Absolute Truth. The Almighty God Who created the Universe wrote it down, through human authors, and it gives clear direction as to how we should live our lives.
Sorry to break it to you, but we serve an intolerant, unrelativistic God. He doesn’t say, “You know, whatever you want to believe is okay, I mean, I can handle it!” He said in Isaiah 42:8 “I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.” He is perfect and holy and He is One Who judges sin.

The reality of sin and its consequences is absolute truth.
Sin is anything that goes against God. (Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”)
Sin is missing the mark of God’s perfection. (Leviticus 20:7 “Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.”)
Sin is not only doing wrong, but also not doing good. (James 4:17 “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”)
Sin has eternal consequences. (“Proverbs 11:19 “As righteousness leads to life, So he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death.” Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”)

The Absolutely Truthful Word of God says that ALL HAVE SINNED, ALL have fallen short, ALL are deserving of eternal death. (Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”) Since that is TRUE, then there is only one way to God and that is through Jesus Christ. John 14:6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father, except through Me.” Acts 4:12, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which you must be saved.”

The Absolutely Perfect, Absolutely Just God is also Absolutely Loving. He sent His Son to die so that all who have fallen short may be brought near. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 1:16-22 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘The just shall live by faith.’ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools…”
There are consequences to what we believe. You can believe something with all your heart and still be wrong. Even the “wisest” man can be utterly foolish. But what is really foolish is when we have the truth, the ABSOLUTE TRUTH and we are ashamed of it. People are (literally) dying because they don’t know the truth about sin and salvation and we are afraid of standing up and declaring the Truth.

I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ…for it is the power of God! And that’s the truth!
